Movie Review: I’m Sam
<I’m Sam>is really a great masterpiece with depicting the love from family between parents and children, and it’ll be likely to make you say “Wow” after you watch it.
<I’m Sam>talks about a story that a mentally challenged father who tries his best to fights for the right of bringing up his daughter. It begins with Sam Dawson (Sean Penn) who looks like mentally retarded and slightly autistic at his job. He becomes a father suddenly and his girl’s mother abandons them instantly when the girl is born. Then with the help of his disabled friends and agoraphobic neighbor Annie Cassell (Dianne Wiest), Sam does his best to raise his girl Lucy Diamond Dawson (Dakota Fanning). However, one day he is "accidentally arrested”, government officials find that he has never mentally matured past the age of seven, so they begin to question his ability to raise his daughter. Although he loses the lawsuit for his legal battle to retain custody of Lucy, aided by high profile lawyer Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer), he and his daughter live together again. The couples who adopt his daughter are moved by the love between his daughter and him.
All of the major members give their best show in this movie, and the music from Beatles shed some lights on the theme of the movie. With the excellent acting and the classical music, we can feel the love between a mentally disabled father and his girl and are immersed in the emotional scene deeply. Maybe he is not a perfect father, but he gives his girl a childhood with full of happiness and they build a life with love together. Every time when I see that the mentally retarded Father tries his best to show his love to his little daughter I am really moved with the eyes full of tears. As we all know we often complain that it’s difficult for us to get very well along with our family members because we don’t spent some time to communicate with them. People often find some excuse such as we are so busy with our jobs; we are tired so that we have no time to care the family members. But is this true? Why don’t we try to spare some time to listen to their thoughts silently and give more compassion and patience with them? A handicapped man can do it very well. Does it give some clues to your true life?
Although the whole story may be lack of reality, maybe it is a fairytale that a mentally challenged person can raise a child very well in the real life. But I think the love from family between parents and children is really true and can be touched by heart. So please slow down your life pace, and spare some time to stay with your family members, finally you’ll found some joy from your life.
