Prostitutes, parade and semi-superpower

What interested international newspaper including The New York Times, The Guardian, The Times and even The Philippine Daily Inquiry to run stories on last week’s parade of prostitutes and their clients in Shenzhen?

The incident is newsworthy in eyes of western media mainly because of its exoticism. It’s a unlike event in a democracy. According a front-page picture on Hong Kong’s Apple Daily, about 100 prostitutes and their clients lined up with one another with a police officer standing behind each of them. They were dressed with bright yellow T-shirts and wore surgical masks to cover faces. Their names, dates of birth and places of origins were read out in public.

The act soon drew fierce criticism across the nation. It was widely denounced as a brazen humiliation of human rights. Shenzhen police defended the act as part of a massive anti-vice operation amid outcry. However, the parade was also said to please China’s No 2 leader Wu Bangguo, ahead of his visit to Hong Kong.

The picture, sensational as it is, bears uncanny resemblances to the scenes of pidou批鬥 in the Cultural Revolution. It’s regrettable that China today has rooms for such act even if the country has turned away from the revolutionary hysteria.

But the Asian giant has another face in the global arena—a face can’t be taken for granted. A renowned political analyst at Tsinghua University predicted that China would in a decade become a semi-superpower, according Canada’s leading daily Global and Mail. US’s edge is drastically diminishing in the face of the spectacular rise of this Asian giant.

A big hug should go to this outspoken professor. At least, he makes us feel there is still something we Chinese can be proud of.
