According to pychologist William James, we do not laugh cause we are happy. But rather, we are happy cause we laugh. The happiest people are those who know how to laugh often and well.
In his book A Touch Of Wonder the author mentioned one of his friends, who had an idea of laughter. Although, he was deaf and almost blind, he just kept on working, laughing and making the most of his life.
It was Christmas Season. Arthur and his friend went into a store to buy something for holiday. One the back of the door is a mirror which is visible when the door is closed. Soon they turned to leave. As Arthur's friend walking towards the door, he saw a reflection in the mirror. The figure he dimly viewed, he thought, was a customer outside walking into the store. He stepped aside, and naturally,so did his reflection. Then he moved forward, and again, the image moved at the same time. Everthing made him feel so puzzled and he retreated.
By now an uneasy hush had falled on spectators. No one knew what do to and to say. But on his third advance the man realized that he was facing a mirror. "Oh!" he cried"it's me."He made a grand bow."Hi,old boy! Good to see you!" The whole store burst into delighted laughter.
He was such an optimistic man ,who knew how to laugh at himself. He accepted his problems and limitions with grace and humor that was also contagious.
We are given the power of laugh by birth, not only to laugh at things, but also laugh things off. We always know difficulties and we'll never be without our share of troubles, but the happy person learns how to laugh most of them off. And that's the reason why they are happy-a laughing matter!
