Japan invaded China in1937. China was weak and did not have an air force. Japanese airplanes bombed China cities at will, without any resistance. I was a boy in Guangzhou in 1937 and 1938 and saw Japanese airplanes dive low and drop bombs on Guangzhou train station.
Chiang Kai-shek was President of China at the time. He hired Claire Lee Chennault, a retired US army air Force captain in 1939 to build a Chinese air force. Chennault got permission from US president Roosevelt to hire American pilots from US army, US navy and US marines as well as civilian pilots. Chennault gave $600 per month for each pilot and an additional $500 for shooting down a Japanese airplane. He also hired mechanics and technicians for his ground crew. Chennault named his group American Volunteer Group (AVG).
In 1940, the United States were sending airplanes and armaments to England to help them fight Germany. One hundred P-40 Tomahawk fighter airplanes were to be sent to England. Chennault and Dr. T.V. Soong, Chinese foreign minister, got permission from US President Roosevelt to buy these fighter airplanes for China. The 100 P-40s were disassembled and sent by ship across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Mediterranean, Suez Canal, and got to Burma. The airplanes were reassembled, but the mechanics only managed to assemble 56 operable airplanes. The rest were used as spare parts.
Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The next day, US President Roosevelt declared war on Japan. On December 18, 1941, Chennault brought his well-trained P-40s from Burma to Kunming, China. In their first air battle two days later, Chennault’s AVG pilots skillfully maneuvered their P-40 Tomahawks to intercept and shot down seven out of ten Japanese bombers which were on a bombing mission over Kunming, with no casualties suffered on the American side. This was the first Japanese air-force defeat in China.
Someone painted shark’s teeth on the front of the P-40 body, and the fighter plane looked like a tiger from a distance. And the name “Flying Tiger” was born.
In April, 1942, Chennault was commissioned a brigadier general in the US army air force and was given overall responsibility for all American air forces in China.
In early 1943, Chennault was promoted to major general. On March 10, 1943, the US 14th Army Air Force was formed to take over all air task forces in China, with General Chennault continued as commander. Members of the US 14th Army Air Force continued to wear the “Flying Tiger” badges on their shoulders and were better known as Flying Tigers.
When the US 14th Army Air Force was being formed, I was a high school student in New York City. A Lieutenant Yee came to our Stuyvesant High School and asked whether or not I want to join the 14th Army Air Force. I said “Yes Sir!” without hesitation as I definitely wanted to go back to China to fight the Japanese, who at that time already conquered Guangzhou, my hometown. When I was inducted into the US Armed Forces in June, 1943, I was sent immediately to Springfield, Illinois. Several days after I arrived, the 407th Air Service Squadron was formed, and I was a member. The 407th was a part of the 14th Air Service Group and which was part of the US 14th Army Air Force. We were sent to Patterson Field, Ohio and there I was trained as an instrument- bombsight specialist. After about a year’s training, we were shipped out in a troop convoy at Newport News, Virginia. We had over one hundred troop ships, protected by an aircraft carrier, cruisers and many destroyers. We went across the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean, Suez Canal, Indian Ocean and landed in Bombay, India. We then took a train to Calcutta, and from there, to Burma. I flew from Burma over the Himalayis mountains to Kunming, China. For most of 1944 until the war was over in August of 1945, 1 served as an instrument-bombsight specialist in Xian, Zhijiang, Chengdu, Lao He Kou, Wuhan and other airfields.
Now, may I tell you what the Flying Tigers did to help win the war against Japan. Japan’s infantry was well equipped and very strong. After conquering Shanghai and Nanjiang, they advanced steadily to conquer Wuhan and Guilin. The Japanese infantry, almost two-million-soldiers strong, formed a line from Wuhan to Hengyung to Liuchow, got ready to advance to Chungqing, the Chinese wartime Capital. However, the US 14th Army Air Force (Flying Tigers), with their well-trained P-51 Mustang fighters and B-24 Liberator bombers attacked and bombed the Japanese supply lines, holding up the advance of Japanese troops. Without adequate supplies of food and armaments, the Japanese army could not advance for almost a year. In the meantime, the Chinese soldiers, regrouped and equipped with American armaments, counter-attacked and at the end drove the Japanese troops all the way back to the Pacific Ocean.
